again: serial practices in contemporary art features work by 15 artists drawn from a gift of 125 photographs to the Atheneum from collector Mickey Cartin, together with works from The Cartin Collection.
Works from On Kawara, Ed Ruscha, Hans-Peter Feldman and Jonathan Monk anchor the central premise of again by looking at serial processes as they are articulated across media, culture, and the last 35 years of contemporary art.
Using photographic history as a springboard, the artists featured in again share a serial practice whereby numerous aspects of a chosen subject are recorded and added to one another over a discreet period of time. This cataloguing tendency displays evidence of an intensely personal creative process allowing the viewer to see how the artists work through ideas, and to learn something about themselves as the series progresses.
The artists who have works in this exhibition are: Roger Ballen, Frank Breuer, Lucinda Devlin, Cecilia Edefalk, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Spencer Finch, On Kawara, Jonathan Monk, Arnold Odermatt, Joe Ovelman, Ed Ruscha, Charles Sandison, Malick Sidibé, Miroslav Tichy, and Eugene Von Bruenchenhein.
Co-curated by Ash Anderson, PhD candidate at Yale University and Steven Holmes, Curator of the Cartin Collection.
