In-Service Training


Treat yourself to a unique professional development opportunity at the Atheneum! Sessions may be booked for teachers of all grade levels and disciplines. See the menu below for each program’s focus. To make in-service arrangements, please call four weeks in advance: (860) 278-2670, ext. 3045. Fees: $25 per person; $200 minimum. CEUs are available.

Learning to Look: This workshop introduces teaching with artworks and linking to non-art curriculum—great preparation for bringing your students on a museum visit with the same title.

African American Art: Examine African American artists of the past two centuries, discussing themes such as personal identity, culture, the African Diaspora, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Art and Writing: Incorporate writing into your art curriculum or energize your language arts lessons with creative writing prompts and skill building.

American Art: Investigate American artworks and artists, exploring their historical, social and political contexts from colonial times to the twentieth century.

School Tours


Our school programs offer a wide range of opportunities to link the visual arts to curricula in language arts, social studies, fine arts, history, geography, and science. Museum visits stimulate student inquiry, foster visual skills, communication, and critical thinking, and encourage an active exchange of ideas about art and culture.

Call first -- To arrange a group visit, please call the Group Visit Coordinator at (860) 278-2670, ext. 3046, Tuesday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. To book your preferred date, we suggest you call as early as possible.

Tell us:
  • School name, address and phone number
  • Group leader's name and phone number
  • Grade level and number of students,
  • Special needs, including limited English proficiency, physical needs, or learning requirements
  • Preferred date and time of visit (check your school calendar)
  • Choice of docent-guided tour or touring on your own
  • Special interests (if appropriate). The majority of groups choose the "Best of the Wadsworth" tour, but you may request any customized showing.
  • How the tour should relate to your students' needs and/or curricula (if appropriate).


    Teacher resources include a pre-visit video that orients students to the museum, familiarizes them with some works of art, and briefly reviews guidelines for museum behavior.
